GQ: When you hear Kate’s character say you were “just some boy who made me laugh at a party once”? how do you relate to that guy? I’d bet you’ve never heard a line like that in your entire life. Has any girl ever hit you that hard? Be honest.
Dicaprio: No. But certainly there have been some cruel words exchanged. And that’s what you draw on. Buddy, it’s the human things you draw on. We go through life, we meet certain people and have connections with them. And it’s much like what Kubrick would say.…
GQ: I love you bringin’ that around.
Dicaprio: No, it’s true. It’s like in Eyes Wide Shut. Two people in a loving relationship who have this stronghold of marriage, but what brought them together? A giant accident brought them together. Timing brought them together. It’s like when Nicole Kidman is telling Tom Cruise’s character?
GQ: How she’d walk away after one?
Dicaprio: Yeah, “I would have walked away with this other guy.” I love that moment.

DICAPRIO: So what we have here is a profoundly well-written, character-driven story about the dissolving of a relationship. Certainly in Kate’s character there’s that great pursuit not to have her life be predigested —
WINSLET: Predetermined.
DICAPRIO: Yes, better word. You’re right. Good one.
WINSLET: [Gagging] Oh, we’re so cute, we finish each other’s sentences. Cutesy, cutesy!
Your characters have big, go-for-the-jugular fights. Were either of you nervous that those scenes could slip into hamminess?
DICAPRIO: We were both relishing those moments. Reading those sequences where these people are at each other’s throats and having these suburban knockout, drag-out fights? Look, there’s not many actresses like Kate Winslet who you know can endure anything you give them and give it right back.
WINSLET: We have a level of understanding which I really don’t have with another actor that I’ve ever worked with at all.
DICAPRIO: [High-fives Winslet] Yeah, homey!Source- ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY Interview | Dec 11, 2008
GQ: It’s fair to say you’ve had an unusual life so far. Can you relate to the emptiness and the hopelessness of suburbia as portrayed in that script? Or do you need to? It’s not like your dad was the man in the gray flannel suit.
DICAPRIO: Richard Yates’s novel is a classic for a reason. The conversations that each character has in his or her head… While I’m sitting here kissing my wife and telling her how much I love her, and how everything is gonna be okay, there’s this inner voice that just detests her and detests my life and knows I’m lying about everything. That inner dialogue in the book was fabulous for all of us.

KATE WINSLET: That’s right, that’s right. And the honesty that — that
they share as a married couple ends up resulting in this incredible cruelty
between the two of them. I mean, we got to be so mean to each other, Leo
and I. And it was great. It was so great. Wasn’t it?
CHARLIE ROSE: I’m just going to sit here and see how you react to that.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO: It was fabulous.
KATE WINSLET: He loved it more than I did, Charlie.
CHARLIE ROSE: Did you?
LEONARDO DICAPRIO: I did.
CHARLIE ROSE: You mean engaging in the cruelty that the script demanded?
LEONARDO DICAPRIO: Well, it was one of the first things about the
screenplay which I immediately said why I really cannot wait to do those
sequences with Kate, because when you develop a sort of — you know
friendship with somebody over the years, there’s just a trust factor there.
We both know that we have the best intentions for each other, but we also
know that we can sort of push each other’s limits. And there’s probably no
other actress out there that I would feel as comfortable sort of attacking,
and I know she could give every bit of it right back to me.
So that — I kept saying during the production film, “I can’t wait for
these sequences.” And so much of the movie was about what was left unsaid
between two people. And Sam really set this movie up like a stage play,
almost like we were kind of living these people’s lives out. I don’t know,
it was a great release, so to speak.

«Leo and Kate»
Her talent:
“To me, she’s the most accomplished actress of her generation. I loved working with her.”
Being together:
“I think we both had been actively looking for something else to do together, but we fundamentally knew that we couldn’t tread on any sort of similar territory [to Titanic].”
Total trust:
“We have been friends for such a long period of time now, and there is an implicit trust level when you’re working with someone that you have that kind of comfort level with.”
No boundaries:
“We got to push each other’s boundaries, we got to push each other emotionally and we knew at all times that we had the best intentions.”
Firm friends:
“I would love to work with Kate any time. We have such a great friendship and we’re on a really good level with each other.”
«Kate and Leo»
Crazy connection:
“Leo and I do have sort of an almost telepathic connection, because we’ve known each other for such a long time and have remained friends consistently over all of these years.”
Know-how:
“I know how Leo thinks, I know how he works, as he does with me.”
Chemistry:
“It was like we had been working together only yesterday. I hadn’t realised how much my chemistry with him has stuck over the years. We had a great time together making this film.”
Loves his face:
“I’m like, ‘Yes! Look at that forehead move!’ He has this amazing furrow [between his brows], which wasn’t as prominent then.”
Only the best:
“We knew that if we were going to do something again, it had to be something big and emotional. I played this very clever cat-and-mouse game in order to get my husband and then my best friend involved.”
«Others love the BFs too!»
Sam Mendes:
“They are just great onscreen together. The truth is that they’re great in life together, too. They are great friends. They have the same work ethic and they are just brilliant partners.”
Kathy Bates:
“They can go deep with each other. There are no boundaries. They can really go the distance with one another. That kind of stuff is rare.”
